RO - Rimetea

Rimetea is an idyllic hungarian village at the foothills of Piatra Secuiului, Apuseni Mountains. It is based in Alba County, Transylvania. Here you can hike or just wander around and absorb it`s preserved unique history.

While being in Transylvania, we have decided to drive to this village that lately I hear so much of. It is around 1 hour drive from Cluj to Rimetea.

Things to do :

Walk around the village and admire the beautiful preserved houses with their unique architecture

Visit the Ethnographic Museum. It is based in the city center and it provides a glimpse of the history of the city and Romania. It is small, but has enough items to discover - such as national costumes from the area, hand-sewed or hand-painted objects and tools used in the past. The cherry on the top, it has a balcony where you can admire the view and take very nice pictures with the Piatra Secuiului mountains in the back (see picture from the top).

Visit the church - is in the city centre, close to the museum.
Visit the souvenir shops (they are all close by to the museum) - they have cute local things, but also traditional food.

Visit the water mill (Vizimalom) built in 1752- it is incredible special and guess what ? It is still working. It is privately owned, there is no fixed fee (you donate at the end as much as you want) and you get a private tour made by the owner of the mill and house. We found it very special and genuine. Mister Istvan Both brought us back in history and offered us a great tour. He is also collecting old objects from the region, refurbishes them and adds them to his collection that later he shares with the visitors. His wife painted all the furniture and as you may see, it is very beautiful and special. He mentioned that his wife has bed & breakfast so for future if we go back, we will try to contact them to have a real local experience!

If you have the proper shoes and good sporty condition, hike the Piatra Secuiului.
